About

The focus of this Barcamp is on User-Centric Identity, the emergent Identity Meta-system and identity at large covering all the topics under it.

If you are interested in attending please Register your interest.

Dates and Venue: 25th and 26th of April - Offices of the State Services Commision, 100 Molesworth street, Thordon, Wellington.

Following on from the E-government BarCamp we want to bring together anybody who knows lots about, or wants to know lots about, Internet Identity. This informal, self organising event will consist of quality presentations and discussions involving people with experience in this area and a great opportunity to network with others in this space.

If you don't know what a Barcamp is start here

Please note this is not about vendors selling stuff.

The Event

Getting identity services working between people, websites, and organizations is a different problem than providing authentication and authorization services within a single organization and this Barcamp is about understanding that difference and learning about the ideas, technologies and people behind the emergent Internet Identity layer – what it means, what to do and who and what is happening in New Zealand.

The aim is simple: bring people in NZ together interested in knowing or doing more in this emergent space. And New Zealand is great for doing just that. Let’s build upon the emerging identity meta-system and tailor it to the NZ context. Let’s leverage the early leadership the State Services Commission (SSC ) has taken in providing the Government Logon Service ( and other planned services) plus the "smallness" of NZ to take a global leadership position in digital identity.

No harm in thinking big.

Who should come: You + anybody who knows lots about Identity, Privacy, and Data portability or wants to know lots about these topics.

What does it cost: $0 + your time.

Sponsors

Operating Barcamps is done on a very limited budget so we a grateful to all sponsorship either direct, or in-kind. It is the sponsor's assistance that make these events possible.

On the Day(s)

The specifics of this are being sorted out but generally BarCamps are self organising. To ensure there that everybody gets the most out of it there will be some simple structure to the day.

Potential Topics

In the spirit of a Barcamp there is no predefined schedule but the topics covered should in some way be related to these three streams: Digital Identity, Data Sharing/Data Portability and Decentralised Social Networks.

  • Surveying the Internet Identity Landscape from OpenID to Higgins to Bandit among others . How related technologies such at ATOM, Micro Formats, FOAF and XFN can be used to build decentralised social networks.
  • Can trust be built into the Internet using recommendation services?
  • What implication does privacy have to data portability and how do technologies like Higgins, CardSpace, OAuth or XDI lend towards that control.
  • Internet scale Identifiers and Single Sign-On
  • What issues are we facing – will the Openness of the Internet end up being the cause of it’s own failure? What social/organisational structures can be put in place to help.
  • What is needed to build trust into the Internet?
  • Understanding OpenID, I-names, Cardspace and Liberty Alliance.
  • Building upon an Identity Layer – Vendor Relationship Management, Data Portability, Privacy, Distributed Social Networks and Trust.

Sessions

Each session time will be approximately 50 minutes. The Internet Identity space is currently evolving fast so it would be good, If you plan to present (and every one should), to prepare a short presentation of your topic and to focus discussion. Presentations should be anywhere between 10 to 20mins this will then allow group discussions to ensue for the remaining time.

We may also put on a couple of “grounding” sessions that provide an overview of the different topic areas in the initial part of the Barcamp.

Add your name, topic overview to the list of proposed Topics.

OpenID Devcamp

As part of this Barcamp it would also be great to get a bit of OpenID integration done. So if you manage a site that requires users to signup and login you may want to get your site integrated with OpenID. Details are here

From simply setting up the Wordpress OpenId plugin, installing the Mediawiki OpenId extension or doing a bit of hacking with the OpenID libraries this will be the time to do it.

Of course we won’t be limiting to OpenID. Want to implement OAuth or Cardspace or know how to do it then put your name down for the Devcamp. Interested in showing how to implement XFN or FOAF.

The organisation of this Barcamp is being done in the BarcampIdentity Google group. Please join this group if you want/can help out or just want to keep up with planning by sending email to barcampidentity-subscribe@googlegroups.com
